About your ward.

Kemptown is in many ways an iconic ward for the city. It houses the world's oldest operating electric railway, one of the most famous piers in the world, is the end point for the famous London to Brighton Vintage at Rally, and has featured in some of the most well known films ever made. It is the home of the Madeira Terrace, Sussex Square & Lewes Crescent, Royal Crescent, and Madeira Drive. Films made there include Brighton Rock, based on the novel by Graham Greene, and Quadrophenia about the Mods & Rockers. It is also the venue for the finishing point in many of the parades and races that take place in the city or have the city as their finishing point. Famous actors to have lived in Kemptown include Sir Laurence Olivier, Joan Plowright, and Dora Bryan.

Liberal Democrats brave the elements to speak to Kemptown voters

In terrible weather on Tuesday 26 March, Josh Babarinde, the Eastbourne Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, turned out with the local Kemptown Lib Dem team to speak to the voters of the ward.

Voters were impressed and many said they were encouraged with the Lib Dems and the amount of work they had done for the ward over the last year. Many recognised Robert and his name was well known to them for his work and support in the ward.

If you want to help by volunteering or donating contact the local Lib Dem team at kemptown@liberalbrighton.org, they would love to hear from you.

Breaking News.

Robert Brown adopted as the Liberal Democrat candidate for the Kemptown Ward election on 2 May 2024.

Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats have chosen Robert Brown to be their candidate to represent Kemptown Ward.

Since standing in the May 2023 local elections, Robert has been working hard to help residents and businesses all over Kemptown. Like many residents, Robert feels let down and ignored by the current councillors elected to represent Kemptown and has taken on board many issues on behalf of residents.

Robert says, “We’re coming up to the anniversary of this Labour administration but for the people I speak to every day, things have only got worse. Elected representatives are missing in action, emails and requests for support are ignored, surgeries are inaccessible, and it is left to residents to sort things out themselves due to the lack of representation. I have been helping them with issues such as potholes, street and kerb parking and bin collections.”

“In addition, some of the council decisions seem out of touch with the reality of the issues faced by the people of Kemptown, and there is no-one to speak out for Kemptown Ward against these decisions.  Our residents deserve better.”

If any residents or businesses require assistance from Robert, please contact him via email:kemptown@liberalbrighton.org.

If elected, Robert Brown promises he will:

  • Provide real representation in the Council Chamber for Kemptown residents and businesses.
  • Hold regular ward surgeries across Kemptown for all.
  • Address the parking chaos that benefits no-one.
  • Provide regular updates on Madeira Terraces, Black Rock and seafront plans.
  • Ensure the Gasworks site is developed appropriately, without contamination to our local habitat.
  • Scrutinise and advise on Valley Gardens Phase III.

For more information about Robert Brown’s policies or for interview requests, please contact Caroline Ellis: caroline.ellis@liberalbrighton.org.

The voters in Kemptown are to have another chance to elect a councillor to represent them as the disgraced ex-Labour Councillor, Bharti Gajjar, announces her resignation. Voters in this ward have suffered from little say in their affairs as the former Labour councillor chose not to attend council or ward meetings. The other existing Labour councillor for Kemptown is noticably missing in action leaving it up to Robert Brown, the Liberal Democrat candidate in the May 2023 elections, as the only voice out there fighting for their interests. Robert has held surgeries with voters and chased up the council on their behalf with his efforts being publicised through the local press. Robert has said that he intends to stand again for selection as the Liberal Democrat representative for Kemptown in the forthcoming by-election. The date of the by-election is still to be announced.
